Exploring Chiang Mai on a Motorbike – Pt1

To explore Chiang Mai…. out of the old city to see what the mountain of Doi Suthep and Pui National Park had to offer. We rented a motorbike (fully automatic) for 3 days. The cost of one-day rental was 250 baht with insurance. Also we were given 2 helmets…but only later I read that “… rented helmets are generally a bad joke on your head! Helmets have visors that keep grit and bugs out of the eyes! Buy a new one for less than 1000 baht from a shop on Chiang Moi Road.”

We didn’t. Travelling doesn’t go with glamour or the top level hygiene.  As a deposit for a motobike you need to leave or your passport or 5000 baht. The motorbike was worth every penny (sathong) of the price. Petrol cost – 25/30 baht per litre.

Day 1

ChiangMai University (CMU) – the most prestigious educational institution in Northern Thailand.

Wat Chet Yot (A Temple of Seven Spires) –  a Buddhist temple that is a centre of pilgrimage for those born in the year of the Snake. It was completed in 1476. “The spacious arrangament of buildings, trees and old fundations gives this temple the atmosphere of  a historical park”. It’s a peaceful place. Only a few tourists, monks and young people sketching.  Admission free, there is a car park there that is important because this temple is a little over 2,5km northwest of the old city along Chiangmai-Lampang Superhighway 11.

Tiger Kingdom – we went there on the motorbike just to see the place as we are planning the visit fully in February when my daughter arrives. Tiger Kingdom is 35km away from Chiang Mai and it took us about 30 minutes to get there. We made a recognisance and we liked what we saw, so we will be back.
Maya Lifestyle Shopping Centre in the western part of Chiangmai (Nimmanhaemin district), a contarporary temple for young Thais was our next stop that day. New and very modern with a rooftop area that opens at 5p.m. and gives you access to a nice view of the mountain and to it’s bars and restaurants.
